Round 18 Review

19s Report (From the Ox)

The playing group knew we could be competitive on the proviso our attitude was positive and effort remained high for the entire game. There were several positional changes which also presented the group with a challenge

The game started well by winning the coin toss and kicking to the Highett Rd end (right of screen) with the aid of the Hampton doctor(breeze!). Our midfield were dominate around the stoppages mainly due to the fine tap ruck work of Cal Lefebvre and this translated into early scoreboard pressure. Despite kicking several goals our ball movement was a tad slow and our forwards weren’t able to put enough pressure on Skyes rebounding defenders. It was pleasing though to go into the quarter time break with a two-goal advantage.

The theme going into the 2nd quarter was to control the ball by foot, forwards play high up the ground and when the opportunity presents itself look to hurt Skye on the counter and get the ball over the back into our forwards working back towards goal. It was imperative we scored into the Hampton doc but equally important our attitude remained high regardless of the scoreboard. To the players credit we executed perfectly and were able to control the ball by foot, score into the Hampton doc and defend brilliantly. We took a one goal advantage into the major interval which was huge in the context of the contest and put us in a good position to win the game.

In the sheds we spoke about maintaining our effort, moving the ball quickly and taking the game on. What happened next I didn’t foresee.  The team absolutely dominated the quarter in every aspect, forwards kicked goals at will, the mids dominated on the inside and our backline held up superbly. We took a six-goal lead into the last break but the Hampton doctor was still giving the Highett Rd end a big advantage.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              The last quarter was brilliant with our pressure on the opposition exceptional but more importantly our ball movement continually improved. All players had an influence on the victory which shows what a bright playing future there is if we stick together and push onwards for 2017 and beyond.   Reynolds & Blair kicked 3 majors with best players Smithy, Reedy, Bunny, Lewy, Selbsty & Lefebvre.

Ressies Report(By Simon Beshara)

This game was a must win for Hampton but our lack of intensity was surprising and also disappointing. Our ball movement was okay at times but our defensive pressure was very poor, we got caught ball watching and allowed Keysie to take uncontested marks. We only trailed by a kick at the major interval and the game was still up for grabs.

In the third term our effort increased but our positioning around the ground was abysmal and we basically watched our finals aspirations disappear in the space of 10 minutes of play. We can hold our heads high as we had a crack in the last quarter but went down by 10 points. Smithy and Hughesy were fantastic with 2 goals each-superb! Best were Harris Nixon Caffa  Leesy and Papa

Seniors

The first quarter was an even contest with both midfields getting plenty of the ball, but in the second quarter Keysies ability to find the loose player behind the contest gave their forwards a head start on our defenders which translated into a 37 point deficit at the main break. Across the ground we tightened up in the second half to force turnovers which we were able to capitalise upon. Woody and Bolg provided targets up forward and with Chevvy and Gasssy lively we weren’t out of it. Corey Smith and Feather provided drive from defence and the mids in Gizza, Gunda, Hayesy and Westy pumped the ball forward to see Zac Allen take a screamer. We went down by 18 points but it was a never say die effort which we can take the positives from.

Thanks to Andy Bekierz for once again taking some great shots of the 19s but also taking the club photos this week-much appreciated.
